Primary Open Angle Glaucoma (POAG) is an eye disorder that builds up pressure in the eye and affects the nerves of the retina, causing pain and damaging vision. This variant of the disease, likely caused by a recessive mutation to the gene ADAMTS17, occurs in the Chinese Shar-Pei/Shar Pei/Sharpei. The mutation is also associated in this breed with a similar painful eye condition, Primary Lens Luxation (PLL). Similar variants of POAG also occur in the Basset Hound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen, and Basset Fauve de Bretagne.
Características clínicas
En los perros afectados, las fibras que sostienen el cristalino se rompen o desintegran. Como resultado, el cristalino cae en la posición incorrecta dentro del ojo. El resultado es la pérdida de la visión.
Información adicional
En el Shar-Pei Chino, se encontró que una mutación en ADAMTS17 estaba asociada con un diagnóstico de POAG, PLL o ambos. Sin embargo, aún no está claro si estos casos son PLL clásicos o representan un proceso de enfermedad crónica con POAG como la única enfermedad primaria.
